Previamente es necesario precisar que cuando nos referimos a "industrialización", y aun cuando existen distintas definiciones que intentan dar cuenta de este complejo fenómeno, la entendemos como un proceso que tuvo lugar sólo en determinadas regiones de diversos países europeos y de los Estados Unidos, y que implicó no sólo la utilización de importantes innovaciones tecnológicas, el uso intensivo de cuantiosas sumas de capital o la introducción de formas capitalistas en la organización de la producción, sino también profundos cambios en la estructura agraria, social, política y económica, que hicieron de estas sociedades, regiones y países industrializados o modernos1. A partir de lo anterior es posible afirmar que todo análisis acerca de tos procesos de industrialización en Chile debe partir de la base que estos, en ningún caso, lograron poner en marcha una "revolución industrial" propiamente tal, aun cuando sí pudieron, al menos en el ámbito local o regional, impulsar un cierto desarrollo de la actividad industrial, siguiendo algunos patrones de la de algunos de los países industrializados. Este trabajo, considerando las precisiones anteriormente expuestas, intenta caracterizar el desarrollo de los empresarios alemanes de Valdivia, partiendo de la pregunta de si la actividad por ellos emprendida presentó o no algunas de las características evidenciadas en los países industrializados, es decir, si su modelo de actividad industrial se basaba en el sistema de producción denominado como "fábrica", que entre otros elementos se caracterizaba por la utilización de máquinas -especialmente de vapor y posteriormente eléctricas-, por la centralización de la producción en un solo recinto, por la aplicación del principio de la división del trabajo y de técnicas productivas cada vez más refinadas, por cancelar los salarios a sus trabajadores en dinero efectivo y, finalmente, por su clara orientación al lucro, es decir hacia el mercado2. Con el objeto de poder responder adecuadamente a esta cuestión, comenzamos con una breve descripción de la ciudad de Valdivia antes del arribo de los alemanes hacia 1850; enseguida se realiza una caracterización de este grupo, donde se considera, entre otros elementos, su perfil profesional y educacional. A continuación, el análisis se centra en la revisión de cuatro sectores productivos desarrollados íntegramente por empresarios de origen germano: las fábricas de cerveza, la industria del cuero, las destilerías de alcohol y los astilleros. Finalmente, y para tener una visión más amplia de las actividades y de algunos de los vínculos socioeconómicos desarrollados por estos empresarios, revisaremos el papel que ellos desempeñaron en el ámbito del transporte marítimo y en la organización de asociaciones de carácter económico, en cuanto instituciones que cumplían con la función de representar sus intereses ante la sociedad. Por último, cabe señalar que el arco de tiempo que cubre este trabajo es el de 1850-1914. La primera fecha marca el inicio del proceso de inmigración germana hacia Chile3 y la segunda representa el comienzo de una época de profundos cambios, que alteraron no sólo el desarrollo de las industrias alemanas en Valdivia, sino también parte importante del contexto nacional e internacional. A pedido suyo escribo estas líneas de presentación. ¿Qué Digna necesita alguna presentación? Ella, ¿la voz autorizada de Valdivia, cuyos conocimientos profesionales de historia y geografía y educación cívica, títulos que ostenta, dan a sus escritos peso, consistencia y autoridad? A mi parecer es la forma elegida por Digna para su libro, el ensayo, la que más sienta a su talento creativo. Así puede desplazarse libremente entre los hechos, acontecimientos y personajes y el contexto que los contiene o encierra. Así puede moverse con libertad entre la ficcionalización de los hechos y el tono distanciado, muchas veces irónico, de su vo/ nnim!iv;i Digna ha hecho suya esta forma literaria y ha agregado a su flexibilidad inherente, su talento para lo anecdótico y para visualizar los eventos que relata, los personajes que los animan y los ambientes en que estos ocurren. «El Encuentro de los héroes», es un ejemplo de esto. Está, sabemos, basado en hechos históricos, y la autora logra exitosamente dar vida a los personajes y hacer vivido al marco histórico que los encierra «La Chinda» es otro buen ejemplo de su habilidad para crear personajes «redondos» y una ambientación atmosférica adecuada. Otro aspecto que creo digno de destacar es el humor muchas veces amargo e irónico, que caracteriza a todos sus relatos. Es el humor que enseña la vida a aquellos que han vivido grandes tragedias o desilusiones pero que no se quiebran. Por el contrario, más bien ello da su mirada (porque este rasgo que se aprecia en sus escritos se evidencia también en su autora) una cierta «distancia estética». Sus relatos, por lo menos la mayoría de ellos, invitan al lector a conocer, entender y perdonar. Sus orígenes personales, muchas veces abiertamente biográficos, dan la impresión de que la autora ha catalizado creativamente su vida y la ha incorporado con éxito a la textura de sus escritos, que ha hecho del dolor y la contingencia el material adecuado para tejer sus historias. ¡Milagros del proceso creativo que permite hasta el perdón! Como Próspero en La Tempestad de Shakespeare, perdonando a su enemigo después de haber entendido (¿intuido?) que sólo el perdón lo puede elevar a aquel plano superior, espiritualmente hablando, que todos anhelamos y aspiramos alcanzar. Otro rasgo del talento creativo de Digna es a mi parecer, el hábil manejo de «la anécdota» para crear una viñeta viva y actual de situaciones que conllevan muchas veces una enseñanza no especificada pero sugerida, como sucede con «Silente, el hombre mudo que habló». Este relato, como muchos otros en esta colección presenta también su contraparte, «el otro sí», ello es, el otro lado de la moneda, un punto de vista opuesto, aunque siempre complementario, a la visión total del relato. Este rasgo revela otra habilidad de Digna y de todo buen escritor»: la capacidad imaginativa para trasladarse o, mas bien, para ser otra persona, para abandonar la jaula del ego e introducirse on la del ego ajeno. «La Chinda», «La Cesantía que se curó con lejanía», «La Pobre Tía Rica», etc., todos tienen su «otro sí» que añade interés y complejidad a los relatos. Este aspecto está, por supuesto, entregado en el título mismo, «El Cristal con que se mira...» y configura el tono narrativo de casi todos los relatos y ensayos que constituyen el libro. La metodología de campo -explica la autora- consistió en la recopilación de un extenso corpus, principalmente en las Regiones IX y X de Chile, sobre la base del lenguaje habitual y en el entorno natural del mapuche. Además se utilizaron textos fundamentales transcritos por algunos investigadores, entre otros las Memorias de un cacique, dictadas por el viejo lonco Pascual Coña al padre Ernesto de Moesbach antes de 1927 y los Estudios araucanos de Rodolfo Lenz, escritos entre 1895 y 1897. Christopher Dawson, el célebre historiador inglés, desde un ángulo muy amplio se ha referido a este punto distiniguiendo la fluctuación de la preponderancia história de ciertas zonas o ciudades que, independientemente de su desarrollo actual, desempeñaron en el desarrollo estancieros. De los acontecimientos del pasado, un papel a veces protagónico Guardadas las debidas proporciones, parece ser que el acontecimiento de la toma de Valdivia en 1820 por la escuadra chilena al mando de Lord Tomás Alejandro Cochrane, tuvo en su época una significación tal que es difícil captarla partiendo desde nuestra actual visión sobre el rol que en la gesta de la independencia debieron desempeñar las distintas regiones del continente. Sólo la conmemoración del sesquicentenario de aquel heroico evento ha venido a desencadenar la composición de una serie de monografías y artículos que cual más, cual menos, muchas veces rectifican apreciaciones rutinariamente repetidas por la historiografía tradicional, si es que no revelan novedades de más o menos bulto en el conjunto de los acontecimientos que en definitiva precipitaron la total liberación del continente americano respecto de la metrópoli que por tres siglos, con inevitables limitaciones pero también con innegables aciertos, había tutelado su paulatino desarrollo hasta hacerlo llegar a la madurez necesaria para poder labrarse por sí mismo la legítima independencia. El estudio que sigue a esta presentación se inscribe dentro de esta línea y es por esto que su publicación- no puede menos de celebrarse plausiblemente como otra visualización más dentro del enfoque positivo que un acontecimiento del pasado, de la relevancia del que se trata, se merece. ha autora, que obtuvo uno de los premios acordados en el concurso nacional abierto con motivo de la conmemoración citada, ha logrado hacer una presentación veraz de los hechos en términos capaces de llegar en forma directa al lector no necesariamente erudito, tal vez el más necesitado de adecuada información. Este solo mérito asegura al presente estudio una misión concreta que complementa la de las otras obras dedicadas específicamente y tal vez a veces en forma bastante profunda al fenómeno estudiado abarcando todas sus virtualidades.
