Este proceso histórico significó la implementación de un ejército profesional y permanente de la corona española en territorio chileno, considerado por la historiografía decimonónica, como un hito que divide la historia entre Conquista (antes de la destrucción de las 7 ciudades) y la Colonia (después de la destrucción) siendo esta segmentación lineal, el objeto de estudio. El libro, La destrucción de Osorno. Rebelión mapuche-huilliche en el Chauracahuin, 1598-1604, sur de Chile, es un trabajo que da a conocer el contexto histórico en el cual se desarrollaron estos hechos e indaga en los motivos humanos que influenciaron en el accionar de los diversos actores históricos: mapuche y españoles. En ese sentido, este libro analiza el proceso histórico utilizando las metodologías tanto de la Interpretación Histórica como del Análisis Territorial y de Interpretación Cultural. Su autor, el Mg. en Ciencias Humanas, mención Historia; Mg. en Estudios Culturales y Literarios de la Universidad de Los Lagos y actual tesista del Doctorado en Ciencias Humanas, mención Discurso y Cultura en la Universidad Austral de Chile, Javier Soto Cárdenas, señala que este trabajo es un aporte al estudio de estos hechos, no desde el punto de vista de la destrucción en sí (que siempre se ha visto como algo negativo desde la cultura occidental), sino centrado en descubrir: ¿Por qué ocurrió esto? ¿Qué llevó al pueblo mapuche a pensar y actuar así? .Creo que en general la historiografía no se había detenido en hacer esas preguntas, que son más de orden filosófico, y que de alguna manera es el aporte del plan de estudios del Magíster en Ciencias Humanas, afirma el historiador. A partir de la revisión bibliográfica, Soto Cárdenas identificó que a pesar de su erudición y documentación, muchos historiadores escriben sobre la Cuestión Indígena, desconociendo profundamente los factores y consecuencias que estos hechos conllevan en la lógica del sujeto subalterno colonizado.
